Nationwide Initiative Has Led to Nearly 1.2 Million Adoptions & Raised More Than $5 Million Since 2015  

Munster, IN – July 29, 2025 – Humane Indiana has joined NBCUniversal Local’s 11th annual Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation campaign. Humane Indiana’s Clear the Shelters event will take place the Humane Indiana Shelter & Adoption Center located at 421 45th St in Munster on Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24.

As part of the nationwide initiative, NBC and Telemundo stations partner with animal shelters and rescues in their communities to promote pet adoption and raise funds that support animal welfare. Since its 2015 inception, Clear The Shelters has helped nearly 1.2 million pets find new homes and has raised more than $5 million for participating shelters and rescues. 

“Clear the Shelters is more than just a weekend of adoptions; it’s a chance for our animals to find the forever families they’ve been waiting for,” shared Jessica Petalas, Humane Indiana’s Senior Director of Shelter & Clinic Operations. “Every kennel we empty means more space is made to save another life, and we’re inviting the entire community to be a part of this lifesaving mission.”

Humane Indiana’s Clear The Shelters weekend includes reduced adoption fees on dozens of pets who are available for same-day adoption. Specifically on Saturday, August 23rd, Humane Indiana’s adoption event will feature food trucks, Humane Indiana mascot “Cal,” donation opportunities, and informational booths featuring local animal service organizations.
